FAQs

Any new registrant, including Saskatchewan graduates, is required to meet the full yearly requirement before the next renewal, even if there is less than a year between registration and renewal.

If you are on leave from your employment and are licensed as a practising member, you must complete the requirements.

Non-practising members should also meet the continuing competency requirement if they wish to convert to a practising membership more readily in the future.

Associate and retired members do not need to meet the continuing competency requirement.

Activities completed from April 1 of the previous year to June 1 of the current year can be documented towards requirements.

This means that activities completed between April 1 and June 1 may count towards either that year’s renewal or the next year’s renewal but may not be counted more than once. No carryover from prior years is permitted.

If, for example, you attended a conference on May 15, 2024 that was not counted towards your 2024-2025 licence renewal, you may count it towards your 2025-2026 renewal.

Any learning which is intended to improve your practice, and/or help you gain pharmacy-specific knowledge or skills that are relevant to your practice can be documented towards the requirements. SCPP mandatory and recommended training contributes to meeting requirements. For example, First Aid and CPR-C, and other activities listed in the Training and Development table may be included. For more information on how to claim non-accredited CEUs please see “How much time should I claim per activity? Are there any limits?” for guidance.

Following quality improvement (QI) principles, SCPP examines PDL submissions on a yearly basis and makes modifications for improvements.  You may anticipate changes to the PDL annually. Revisions are made to better align the PDL with the 5 steps of SCPP’s CPD cycle, and are intended to support continuing professional development.

Check the CAP Current Requirements page (above) for a link to the most recent PDL before starting a new document.

No. With the current PDL for 2025-2026 Renewal, LPRs are no longer required as this information is captured in the PDL. If you have previously completed LPRs, retain them as part of your records for three (3) years.

Accredited learning activities have been reviewed, have met specific standards and are approved by a recognized pharmacy accrediting organization. These learning activities meet criteria to ensure they are unbiased and are of high quality. Accredited activities include online courses, conference sessions, and more. These activities will state the number of accredited hours assigned (e.g. CEUs) and identify the accrediting body (e.g. CCCEP, USask CPE, etc.).

The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) has established Entry-to-Practice Competencies for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, as well as Model Standards of Practice  (quick reference guide). These provide a national framework and common understanding of the expectations of pharmacy professionals in all settings across Canada and define what quality pharmacy care is.

The standards are organized into 5 domains: Providing Care, Knowledge and Expertise, Communication and Collaboration, Leadership and Stewardship, and Professionalism (see figure below). Pharmacy professionals should refer to these standards often to reflect on the quality of their practice. By focusing learning activities on these domains, pharmacy professionals can ensure that their individual professional development addresses areas for improvement across each aspect of the nationally defined standards and achieve continuous improvement of the overall quality of their pharmacy care.

All practising members must annually select education of their choice on one of the themes or concepts found within the person-centred framework.

Pharmacy managers will take continuing education that is aligned to pharmacy manager competencies on an annual basis.

See Training and Development for a full and evolving list.

Members should be aware of renewal requirements for previously completed training (e.g., Privacy Officer training must be renewed every 3 years, etc.).

The SCPP Council approved the ongoing learning requirement for continuing cultural safety in 2022. This requirement ensures that members complete learning focused on the themes and concepts included in the Person-Centred Framework.  Every member will have their own unique learning needs in these areas. Members should self-assess their needs and choose relevant education to meet their individual goals. They are encouraged to use any relevant resources, accredited or non-accredited. When documenting this activity in the PDL, members should describe in the application section how they have or will apply their learning to their pharmacy practice and how it benefits their patients. There is no set CEU minimum or maximum for this requirement. Use the check box in the PDL to indicate that the activity is intended to meet the continuing cultural safety requirement.

Since 2022, as per Council policy, all Community Pharmacy Managers must complete the mandatory Community Pharmacy Manager training course before starting their role as pharmacy manager. After completing the course, pharmacy managers must complete continuing education that is aligned with pharmacy manager responsibilities on an annual basis. Managers are encouraged to assess areas where they would like to gain knowledge and skills relevant to their individual learning needs. There is no set CEU minimum or maximum for this requirement. Indicate that the activity is intended to meet the manager requirement in the check box in the PDL. Please refer to pages 4 and 5 of the Pharmacy Manager Policy for more information. Pharmacy Managers are reminded to regularly read SCOPe to stay up to date on any required training enacted by the registrar related to significant practice changes in Saskatchewan.

Claim time spent on meaningful learning that is relevant to your practice. This includes time spent assessing your learning needs, planning your professional development, participating in, and completing the learning activity, reflecting on your progress, and evaluating whether you met your learning and implementation goals.

Do not include time spent on related activities, such as travel to an event, getting copies of the materials, delivering a presentation, discussing topics outside of your learning project with colleagues, interviewing patients, or participating in a committee meeting.

Accredited Activities

  • Claim the listed CEU value.
  • There is no limit to the number of CEUs that can be claimed for a single accredited activity.
  • There is no limit to the number of CEUs that can be claimed in total for accredited activities.

Non-Accredited Activities

  • Claim one CEU for one hour spent on a non-accredited activity. Increments of 0.5 hours are recommended.
  • A single long-term non-accredited activity that occurs over three months or more can be claimed up to a maximum of 15 CEUs. You must record progress on long-term non-accredited activities on a regular basis (at least monthly).
  • All other single non-accredited activities are considered short-term activities and can be claimed up to a maximum of 4 CEUs each.
  • There is no limit to the total number of CEU that can be counted for non-accredited activities (i.e., a total of 15 CEU of non-accredited can meet overall requirements).

The PDL is a document that summarizes your professional development activities during the year. Each page is designated for recording one activity, but there is no requirement for a minimum number of activities to be included. If you have fulfilled the minimum requirement of completing and recording at least 15 CEUs, which includes any mandatory training, your PDL is considered complete. It is acceptable for some members to add extra pages, while others may have blank pages at the end.

All practising members are required to upload their PDL for licence renewal. A portion of PDLs will be reviewed annually to assess the current state of the competency assurance program, inform future program needs, and help support member CPD. You may be asked to submit additional evidence for review, and/or discuss your portfolio with a reviewer (see answer to “What information should I record and submit?" and “What records should I retain?”).

1. Your Professional Development Log(s)

2. Relevant supporting documentation (when available).

Supporting documents could include conference programs, presentation outlines or slides, certificates of completion, notes made during a literature search, learning project records, a completed Continuing Professional Development (CPD) tool, etc. These documents may serve as supporting evidence of your continuing professional development submission, if requested.

Do not upload these supporting documents at the time of renewal. However, SCPP may request copies during CPD verification so retain all records related to CPD for 3 years. After 3 years, they may be destroyed.
