Injections Training Requirements

Advanced Method Certification (AMC) and First Aid / CPR Requirements – Pharmacists Only

The below outlines what is expected of a member who wishes to administer medications by injection and other routes – SCPP Advanced Method Certification (AMC).

In order to provide medications by injection and other routes, SCPP requires that you:

  1. maintain current First Aid and CPR Level C certification,
  2. complete all required training available through a CCCEP (two-staged) Competency-Mapped Accreditation training program (Note: USask CPE accepts University CCCEP-accredited injection training from other provinces. If candidates have injected in the previous two years and were certified by their provincial regulatory authority, then they will not need to take Injection training to certify. Please check with USask CPE),
  3. complete USask CPE's SK-Specific Module 16 (if the CCCEP training is taken from a provider other than USask CPE), and
  4. properly declare AMC during licence renewal or apply on your member portal outside of licence renewal season.

Please review your practising licence. If you see the word “Conditions” and an “A” this means you have NOT fulfilled one or more of the three requirements as stated above and may NOT provide medications by injection or other routes until such time as you have completed all requirements. Please contact the office for more information.

First Aid and CPR Level C Certification

Acceptable CPR and First Aid training providers are:

If your First Aid and CPR Level C certification is expired and you are unable to obtain proof that your certification has been extended, you should not provide medications by injection until you can re-certify. Once you complete your First Aid and CPR Level C re-certification, you will need to reapply from your member portal for your AMC with SCPP and once approved, you may then begin to administer drugs by injection.

The minimum acceptable training required is:

  • Standard First Aid; and
  • CPR Level C (with AED).

Note that:

  • You must attend an in-person or blended course. Courses delivered solely online are not acceptable.
  • The course must be offered, and taken, in Canada.

Proof of completion must be provided (i.e., uploaded to your member profile). Any other First Aid and CPR course requires a request to the Registrar with the rationale for acceptance (i.e., mapped against the competencies for the above acceptable courses). A fee, as per the SCPP Administrative Bylaws, will be required prior to any review or decision.

Once Injections Training and First Aid and CPR Level C Certification is Complete::

  1. SCPP confirms all requirements for injection training have been met.
  2. SCPP updates the member's profile.
  3. The member then logs in to their member profile and completes the AMC form under APPLICATIONS.
  4. SCPP then approves the application and emails the member their certificate.
  5. SCPP then also mails the member a new practising licence with the Condition A removed.

Ministerial Order to Enable Additional COVID-19 and Influenza Immunizers

Advanced Method Technician and Student Certification

A Ministerial Order under the The Public Health Act (1994) enables pharmacy students/extended interns and pharmacy technicians to administer COVID-19 and Influenza immunizations until March 31, 2024.

As per the information from the Ministry of Health, SCPP wants to make sure extended interns and  pharmacy student interns that have completed at least two years of education at the University of Saskatchewan, and registered pharmacy technicians are informed and prepared as to how they can play a role in the mass immunization program in Saskatchewan.

  • Registered Pharmacy Technicians will be required to complete Advanced Method Technical Certification (AMTC) training requirements should they wish to become an immunizer for COVID-19 and Influenza.
  • Extended Interns (graduated/convocated students that have not yet passed PEBC and registered with SCPP as a member) will be required to complete Advanced Method Student Certification (AMSC) requirements should they choose to participate. This enables them to administer approved COVID-19 and Influenza vaccines only. Other injections and immunizations are not included.
  • Pharmacy Student Interns in Third and Fourth Year (currently in year 3 and 4) will be required to complete AMSC training requirements should they choose to become an immunizer for COVID-19 and Influenza.
  • Pharmacy Student Interns going into Third Year (currently in year 2, going into year 3) will be required to complete AMSC training requirements should they choose to become an immunizer for COVID-19 and Influenza. Note that the hands-on training can only occur after successful completion of Year 2.
  • Newly Licensed Pharmacists who previously held AMSC: AMSC certification does not automatically convert to AMC. As newly licensed pharmacists, new graduates must not provide drugs by injection or other routes without valid AMC from SCPP. Upon licensure with SCPP as a pharmacist, those who previously held AMSC must attend Live Injection Refresher Workshop through USask CPE to transition to AMC.
  • Hospital Pharmacists who do not have AMC who want to participate will be required to complete the full AMC requirements should they choose to participate.

Note that there are additional training requirements for those who plan to be an immunizer as part of the Province's mass immunization plan. Please see the Training and Development page as well as the COVID-19 Immunizers FAQs document.

Lapsed AMC

Formerly licensed members: As per the current Ministerial Order, formerly licensed pharmacists are no longer authorized to administer COVID-19 and/or Influenza vaccines.
